An interesting article from the Washington Post on doubting Mormons' online communities:

Johnston doesn’t have certitude. But he does believe he’s Mormon.

Thanks Kish! Good article. I guess the cat is outta the bag now for Johnson with his ward. I wonder how they will treat him now.

Those leaving the church are a fraction of 1 percent each year and it is a trend that is decreasing rather than increasing,” said Michael Purdy, a church spokesman.

How in the world do they come up with a number of less than 1% when the retention rate of converts is so low?

Creative math?

I would guess that number is resignations. Not people who stop coming to church.

The retention rate of converts has nothing to do with people leaving. Converts who get baptized and then never show up, never return any phone calls, hide when the home teachers come to their door, move away and are never heard from again go into the "inactive" column.

Good article. The more articles of this kind that get published, the more the church leadership is going to be forced to deal with it.
