Temple President, Mission President, Sperm Donor

IDAHO FALLS — A retired Idaho Falls gynecologist sued last year for allegedly using his own sperm to inseminate a woman admitted to the wrongdoing in sworn testimony.

Dr. Gerald E. Mortimer, the accused physician, previously denied having any memory of using his sperm to inseminate the eggs of patients seeking fertility treatments. But now Mortimer has confessed not only to inseminating one patient in this way, but multiple, according to court documents recently discovered by EastIdahoNews.com.

Kelli Rowlette, a Washington resident and Mortimer’s biological child, filed the initial case in March of last year. Rowlette is the child he fathered with one of his patients, Sally Ashby. Ashby and Howard Fowler, who were married in 1980 when the incident took place, sought fertility treatments from Mortimer when they were unable to conceive a child. Fowler and a donor both provided sperm for Mortimer to use in the insemination process. However, Mortimer, without Ashby or Fowler’s knowledge or consent, used his own sperm instead.

Gerald E. Mortimer, the retired obstetrician/gynecologist who allegedly used his own sperm to impregnate a patient undergoing artificial insemination, served as president of an LDS Church temple and a church mission in the Philippines.

A lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Idaho names Mortimer, Linda G. McKinnon Mortimer, and Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Idaho Falls as defendants, accusing them of fraud and medical negligence.

This is not the first time an LDS doctor has been accused of doing this. However, if all the woman asked for was donor sperm then, if he was healthy and intelligent, what is the problem?

Just trying to spread righteous seed, right? Not sure why this Temple President decided to follow the path of another LDS doctor Cecil Jacobson who was sentenced to five years in prison for the same thing.

Temple President Mortimer's legal hopes in Idaho will hinge on his being able to prove he paid a full tithe on the money he saved on sperm samples.

Interestingly, he was called as a Mission President in 2005 - the same year he fled Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Idaho Falls in fear of getting caught. I guess hiding out in the Philippines at the Church’s expense seemed a good option, especially as a Church Apostle found him worthy to do so.

him away in the Phillipines? Which Apostle called him, and will they resign on the basis they don’t have the spirit of discernment?

Again, what is the major problem? Thousands of men around the USA donate sperm, so the act of donating sperm is not in question. The patients knew they were getting donor sperm, and they would never know the identity of the donor. And that means any guy they see at the mall could, in theory, be the father of their child/children. So the fact that the doctor used his sperm, rather than some random packet of frozen sperm, should not really be much of an issue unless he has some sort of genetic disorder.

A cop saw this, pulled him over, then wrote him a ticket for carjacking.

That would make a difference. If he was supposed to use the husband's sperm for insemination then that would be inexcusable. However, if he was supposed to use an anonymous sperm donor then it would make no difference if he used sample #39870 or his own.

Why that is a very un-Christian thing to say. Joseph's baby batter wasn't good enough to father the body of Jesus. It had to be one of the Father's swimmers to get inside Mary's egg.

It makes a lot of difference. Most are looking for certain traits or want to avoid certain traits. They have a right to pick certain traits which is denied if a doctor gives them his own. It is also highly unethical and illegal.

I am not sure of the process, but I would think that there are many steps to screen sperm donors, i.e. medical history, genetic testing, age, etc. The doctor creating his own samples in his office goes against this practice. But the biggest issue I have with this Dr. is that this behavior is just unethical, even if it was legal. Who knows how many kids he has running around, and the ramifications if they were to possibly procreate?
