Trust me, I know how Don Imus is viewed these days but...back in the day he was one of the original shock jocks. I listened to him on radio on his show "Imus in the Morning".

This by far, was my absolute favorite bit he did. Give a listen to...

The Right Reverend Billy Sol Hargis

and another

RIP Don Imus, say Hallelujah.

I know exactly the racist, sexist, and homophobic comments that he made, Cam. I alluded to them in the OP but I'm not going to treat his legacy as if he were a one dimensional character. He was not.

He was also very talented, charitable and advocated for those in need.

I'll pull out some snippets from online.

From his wiki entry:

For two weeks in fall 2006, Imus delivered ongoing 'rants' against Texas Congressman Joe Barton, describing him as "a lying fat little skunk from Texas", a "pipsqueak" and a "coward and a crybaby". Imus also called Barton a "congressional dirtbag", because Barton used his position as a committee chair to prevent passage of the Combating Autism Act, which would authorize funds for autism research. In the weeks before Congress recessed on September 29, 2006, Barton used his chairmanship to prevent the legislative proposal from coming to a vote in the House, rousing the ire of Imus and his wife, staunch supporters of autism research. The bill already had been passed unanimously by the Senate, but Barton opposed the Senate bill's stipulation that centers of excellence investigate environmental factors.

In 1999, Imus and Deirdre founded the Imus Ranch, a working 4,000-acre (16 km2) cattle ranch near Ribera, New Mexico, 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Santa Fe, for children with cancer and siblings of SIDS victims.[99] Until its closing in 2014, the Imus family volunteered their time at the Imus Ranch between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year. Imus continued his broadcasts from a studio there, while the rest of his cast broadcast from New York.
On his September 9, 2014, broadcast, he announced that the New Mexico ranch would be sold, due to his belief that the ranch had "run its course" as well as "health and other issues" (he specifically noted that his breathing had been damaged by a rib injury, making it difficult to breathe in New Mexico's high altitude). Proceeds from the property's sale would go to a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation that will donate to children's cancer causes. In October 2014, the ranch was offered for sale with an asking price of $32 million.[100] The ranch failed to sell after repeated efforts to do so, leading Imus to put the property up for auction in May 2017. Imus earmarked all proceeds from the sale of the ranch for the foundation.[101] The ranch was sold to broadcaster Patrick Gottsch in April 2018, for $12.5 million.[102]

Imus was instrumental in raising over $60 million for the Center for the Intrepid, a Texas rehabilitation facility for soldiers wounded in the Iraq War. The largest technological center of its kind in the country, it is designed to help treat disabled veterans and help them with their transition back into the community. Imus has also taken on the cause of the living conditions at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, visiting wounded veterans at the hospital to boost morale. Imus' reporting preceded Army resignations, including that of Lieutenant General Kevin Kiley, then Army Surgeon General. Imus had earlier criticized Kiley's personal fitness for military duty and dedication to wounded soldiers.

So I have more thing to say here. I know plenty of folks IRL and even on this board who cross lines that I think should never be crossed and yet they are.

It doesn't keep me from valuing them or noting their devotions, accomplishments, strengths and talents.

Enough said.

You seem a little defensive, Jersey Girl. I was just amused by the author’s fixation. He clearly wasn’t a regular listener to Imus. I used to listen to him fairly regularly in the late 90’s and 00’s during commutes. I forget when, exactly, I stopped listening to him, but it most likely occurred when satellite radio was normalized. Anyway, I really enjoyed his prickliness and keen ability to needle powerbrokers regardless of their persuasion.

I wasn't sure where you were coming from, Cam, and I didn't want to see a bunch of crap here about what a racist ____ he was. If Plastic Jesus and The Right Reverend Billy Sol Hargis doesn't tickle the crap out of you...you have no sense of humor at all.

Take your hands off the radio...Hallelujah.

Oh I wanted to say why I loved that one...I was raised up on Billy Graham crusades. This guy nailed both the accent and cadence of the Rev. Billy Graham as well as every ____ sleazy money-loving televangelist I ever saw. I don't put the Rev. Graham in that category though.

But he freaking nailed the voice and the snake oil.

God, that song would come on and it just made my morning!

This post has nothing to do with Don Imus, but something Jersey Girl said:

It doesn't keep me from valuing them or noting their devotions, accomplishments, strengths and talents.

Enough said.

I watched Dave Chappelle's latest stand-up on Netflix last night, and he does a bit on Louis CK's masturbation thing. While I don't entirely agree with his framing of the issue (in fact, he gets it flat ____ wrong, which affects how funny the bit is), I do partly agree with his overall point that there has to be some road to redemption for people.

Here's where I come down on it these days: being famous and well paid is a privilege that very few, very lucky people get. With that privilege comes a responsibility. You ____ with the responsibility, you lose your privileges. It's not like Louis can't perform stand-up (he's doing it now and nobody's stopping him).

But to whine that he "lost everything over this masturbation thing" well... nobody told him to ____ up in such an extreme way. Do you need to be a genius to understand that kind of weird, antisocial behavior might ____ with your ability to earn?

I wish I could still enjoy his comedy, but his real life ____ it up for me. He's not as funny anymore. I don't want to watch him not because he's sinned, but because he lost the juice that was driving his humor. Douche baggery is only funny if you believe it's only a joke.

I don't know much about Imus or whether his reputation is deserved, but I do think if you pursue fame, you can't be surprised to find out you need to watch what you say and do, or whine about it when held responsible.

I really don't know anything about the above or Louis CK. I've heard the name, that's all. I'll look around for info on that.

The above linked video I posted above covers his offense. I just checked the link and now the video is set to private. He was being interviewed upon his retirement, he was remorseful about the incident in question and emotional about ending his career.

After he made a racist comment about them, Don Imus met with the Rutgers female basketball team and their parents for 5 hours. He apologized to them and assured them he would never level such an insult ever again.

And he stuck by his promise. That's about all anyone can and should do in a situation like that.

He was kicked off the air, I dunno, 3-4 times over the years. He always came back. Because the audience basically loved what he does.

When he was in New York City (where I first heard him on radio) he was a radio rock star dealing with drug and alcohol abuse. He cleaned up his life and so far as I know, maintained a healthy lifestyle for the remainder of his life.

He was one of a kind. Often vicious in his criticisms (which I happen to respect in a person) and underneath the caustic exterior there basically beat a heart of gold (which I also admire and appreciate in a person).

I wish I could understand why he didn't accept conventional treatment for prostate cancer. I wish he'd been on air this past year to comment on the current administration. He was a Trump supporter. I can't help but wonder if he would have turned against Trump like he did the Clintons.

I tend to believe that he would have and wouldn't have let up on Trump.

I think that when we lose people like a Carlin or an Imus, we lose so much from our society. People who see the ____, call it out for what it is and cut through it with the knife of their tongue.

Right, I vaguely remember that story. Didn't hear about this outcome, but I didn't know who he was so I didn't really care. It's nice to hear this happened.

You know, when famous people do or say things that mess with their reputations, I think we know the road to redemption when we see it. People have survived scandals. Hugh Grant and Rob Lowe come to mind.

I think you just have to admit the thing and own it... and never ever blame other people for calling you on it.

Pssssst Schmo...if you're in the mood, here's almost 10 minutes of a typical morning drive broadcast back in the day. Well, not all the way back in the day. The Right Reverend Billy Sol Hargis, pastor of the Church of the Goey Death and Discount House of Worship, included. ;-)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIvcVOakkJA

Where Billy's lovely angelic princesses can rub you down before God rubs you out.

Say hallelujah. Say Amen.
