The "blue/red" divide in the US is about rural vs. urban areas. The suburbs are more split, but Trumpism and continued demographic trends is pushing the suburbs more and more in the blue direction. This is mostly offset by the rural areas getting even more red.
You'd be in a more blue area by living in a city in a red state than you would be if you lived outside the city in a blue state. The main thing that makes the "red" states red is the fact that they don't have big cities relative to their overall population.
It's fashionable among conservatives to accuse liberals of living in a cultural bubble, but rejecting the diversity of city experience, which
includes virtually everything you find in the country, seems far more insular.
