How is your daughter's friend currently coping with her situation? Wonder if she might benefit from a Buddhist perspective of letting go of past aspirations and desires, and finding what peace or relief from pain that she can in the present.

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross came up with a number of stages people go through when dying. The best stage was acceptance, where the dying person finds an inner peace and hopefully everyone else will try to make dying as comfortable as possible for her - and that includes not worrying about opioid addiction.
