Ajax, EA has one of the longest and most consistent posting histories on the board. Failing to see his libertarian position as authentic can't be explained by his having a non-libertarian stance. So, either you aren't paying attention which makes your accusation disingenuous or you don't actually understand what libertarianism encompasses.

Did you read the article? Stossel was complaining about how our complicated tax system has led to an entire tax-preparation industry (and expensive CPA's for some people) in order to navigate it. A CPA took exception to that.

Interestingly, there was a movement a few years ago to drastically simplify the tax filing process where most filers wouldn't have to do anything. The government already knows how much most people make, and how much they owe, and could easily figure it out without them needing to do anything.

But the legistlation to implement such a system (and save countless hours wasted by people preparing their tax returns) was thwarted by two groups, one you can guess but one that might surprise you.

Obviously, the tax-preparation industry (Intuit software) marshaled their forces and lobbied against it. But the anti-tax Howard Jarvis association also protested the bill, because they believed (probably correctly) that the act of preparing tax returns reminds people of how much they are paying and make taxes more annoying, which could lead to reduced taxes. If it's simple and painless, then people won't protest.

Here's the whole story:

I used to prepare and file my own tax statements. Pain in the Butt. Everyone claims to want simplified taxes until it is their ox that is getting gored. Your median income earner will usually come out ahead with just the Standard Deduction. Where itemized deductions really pays off is for the very rich. They buy all the Congress critters they need to get what they want. IE; Most people don't donate a dime to political candidates, a few more will donate about $20 to them, along comes the Mega-millionaire and Billionaire donor and guess whom that politician is going to listen to?
