Ten Most Corrupt States

1. Mississippi
2. Louisiana
3. Tennessee
4. Illinois
5. Pennsylvania
6. Alabama
7. Alaska
8. South Dakota
9. Kentucky
10. Florida

Utah escaped from this one, perhaps because arrests and criminal charges for the past two Utah Attorney-Generals came after the story had been written.

Am I seeing a bit of a North/South divide?

From the OP article link:

"Researchers also found that spending in these states was different than their less corrupt counterparts. According to the report, “states with higher levels of corruption are likely to favor construction, salaries, borrowing, correction, and police protection at the expense of social sectors such as education, health and hospitals.”

The paper explains that construction spending, especially on big infrastructure projects, is particularly susceptible to corruption because the quality of large, nonstandard projects are difficult for the public to gauge, while the industry is dominated by a few monopolistic firms. "

Here are some recent headlines that echo the symptoms of corruption from the article -

"Obama keeps pushing his infrastructure plan"

"Obama has said his call for a higher minimum wage is good policy..."

"Obama calls for more spending on military presence..."
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/06 ... in-europe/

note also that Obama has not called for more education funding...just more education lending....

Ok MeDotOrg, educate me. What in the world does that mean?

Illinois is #4 on that list, which doesn't surprise me at all.

Mississippi was only one of six States that went more for Obama during the last Presidential election. Obama ended up losing Mississippi by 11.5% in 2012. The States that border Mississippi are Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee. All four of those States are more conservative than Mississippi.

Alabama

Tennessee

Arkansas

Louisiana

Swing from 2008 to 2012 in each state. Only six states trended more Democratic in 2012: Alaska, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, and New York. The arrows to the right represent how many places up or down on the list the state moved since 2008. States are listed by (increasing) percentage of Democratic votes.

Lol. That's quite a specific category, but is a bit of a deal-killer.

There was a brief piece on the current accusations of voter fraud in Mississippi on NPR this morning. It made me think of this thread. Sounds like quite the happening place to be.
