misinformation From October 2017 General Conference

President Russell M. Nelson in his talk tries to explain why the Book of Mormon is the keystone of the LDS faith and fails miserably

The Book of Mormon affirms:

  1. The individual identity of Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
  2. The necessity of the Fall of Adam and the wisdom of Eve, that men might have joy.

Let’s start with number 1. The Traditional Christian Faith has always taught the individual identity of the 3 persons in the Godhead. The Easton Bible Dictionary points this out.

Trinity

First used by Theophilus (A.D. 168 A.D. - 183 A.D.), or from the Lat. trinitas, first used by Tertullian (A.D. 220 A.D.), to express this doctrine. The propositions involved in the doctrine are these:

  1. That God is one, and that there is but one God (Deut 6:4; 1 Kings 8:60; Isa 44:6; Mark 12:29,32; John 10:30).
  2. That the Father is a distinct divine Person (hypostasis, subsistentia, persona, suppositum intellectuale), distinct from the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  3. That Jesus Christ was truly God, and yet was a Person distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit.
  4. That the Holy Spirit is also a distinct divine Person.

Number 2 would be correct

The Book of Mormon refutes notions that:

  1. Revelation ended with the Bible.
  2. Infants need to be baptized.
  3. Happiness can be found in wickedness.
  4. Individual goodness is adequate for exaltation (ordinances and covenants are needed).
  5. The Fall of Adam tainted mankind with “original sin.”

Number 2 is not an exclusive LDS teaching since lots of traditional Christians don’t except child baptism

Number 3 doesn’t make sense

Number 4 is not mentioned in the Book of Mormon so it is wrong, no Mormon ordinances and covenants are mentioned in the Book of Mormon

Number 5 is completely wrong the Book of Mormon teaches the opposite

Mosiah 16:

3 For they are carnal and devilish, and the devil has power over them; yea, even that old serpent that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their fall; which was the cause of all mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to the devil.
4 Thus all mankind were lost; and behold, they would have been endlessly lost were it not that God redeemed his people from their lost and fallen state.

Mosiah 3

16 And even if it were possible that little children could sin they could not be saved; but I say unto you they are blessed; for behold, as in Adam, or by nature, they fall, even so the blood of Christ atoneth for their sins.

2 Nephi 2:

21 And the days of the children of men were prolonged, according to the will of God, that they might repent while in the flesh; wherefore, their state became a state of probation, and their time was lengthened, according to the commandments which the Lord God gave unto the children of men. For he gave commandment that all men must repent; for he showed unto all men that they were lost, because of the transgression of their parents.
