Hi Dale,

I got your PM and replied, but didn't know that you posted this here. When do you need the art by? It will take a minute. ^^^ Is that what the Prayer circle looked like? Do you have an example I can see? I can def. do a recognizable image of the three men... I found Alexander L. Baugh's article about the letter you refer to, I'm reading it now.

Thanks,

The article by Baugh, found here, http://mormonhistoricsites.org/wp-conte ... _Baugh.pdf is so biased towards Jo and those aligned with him, that threatening to kill the dissenters if they didn't immediately leave Far West is simply "a less than diplomatic tactic" on their part, while Baugh vilifies the dissenters as "subversives" whose only aim was to destroy the church.

Sheesh.

And of course, it was the wrong article. But still interesting.

Thanks for this article. I liked this part:

"Phelps’ repentance appears to have been short-lived. At
the time of the surrender to the Missouri officials, he was one of the Mormon
peace negotiators. However, during the Richmond hearings held in the latter
part of November, he became a witness for the state, testifying against Church
leaders. His actions led to his excommunication by the Twelve at a conference
in Quincy on 17 March 1839."

In other words, pledging loyalty to the church justifies perjury.

Dunno -- I was never a Mormon, never saw the inside of
a temple where endowments are given. The RLDS do not
have temporary, temple-style prayer circles.

But at Nauvoo there were also on-going prayer circles,
that met in private homes and (probably) did not have
much of a tie-in with the secret ceremonies.

I'm postulating a pre-Mormon prayer circle, which would,
perhaps, consist of male and female worshipers, in
alternating order, standing, with heads uncovered, in
a rough circle, with upraised hands and upraised voices.

I think the Reformed Methodists had such services,
where the members sang and shouted "ga-lo-rah!"

At any rate, I'd like to play around with depicting some
of the famous Mormon worthies, before they were
Mormons, at Canandaigua -- where Father Smith is said
to have preached (and made converts) while a jailbird there.

Sorry to interject, but every time I read a post from you there is something intriguing. By "Father Smith" do you mean Joseph Smith senior or Joseph Smith junior (I like to call him little Joe)?

Do you have a link?

Thanks.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

This was Old Joe -- he couldn't pay his mortgage,
so he got thrown in the slammer, along with Eli Bruce.

W. W. Phelps was then the local newspaper editor,
and in every issue he was talking about Eli Bruce.
Bruce was being held in a barred cell, so it might
have been difficult for Phelps to have interviewed
the "masonic martyr," even if Bruce would have
consented to talk to an anti-masonic journalist.

Father Smith was a different case -- he was held
in a regular room, not a barred cell. And, according
to his wife (Lucy) he preached there every Sunday.
Probably the jailors consented to let Smith come
down from his second story detention room and
conduct his Mormon preaching services. But, if not,
he could have preached from an open window to
the listeners below.

This is not the best reference, but it will do:

I'm probably wrong, but I'm imagining that the two converts
Father Smith made in Canandaigua were Susannah Little Stilson
and her husband. Both were living in Canandaigua, and probably
right in the village itself. Her (later) famous brother, Brigham,
was then living a couple of miles southwest of town in Clarissa.

Also living in Canandaigua was Thomas B. Marsh, who had already
been baptized. I imagine that when Father Smith's family members
came to visit with him, they stayed overnight with Marsh --
or perhaps even with W. W. Phelps. At that time Phelps was
selling copies of the Book of Mormon out his his newspaper
office, and allowing Martin Harris to come in, now and then,
to preach Mormonism to curious onlookers.

And yet...... W. W. and Brigham delayed their public baptisms
for several more months.

Why?

Uncle Dale, I was hoping you could help me identify the obscure Mormon apostle in this early daguerreotype...
