My mind gets quite the kerfuffle watching the term “fake news” getting co-opted.

Basically the timeline seems to go:

I. Blogs, social media, and niche “news” sites generate and spread fake news stories (generally aimed predominantly towards those with far right political ideology).

II. Mainstream media investigates the phenomena post-election, with some mainstream news outlets finding fake news generators/writers to interview.

III. For peaking behind the curtain, mainstream media is now labeled “fake news” by those who were predominantly the consumers of fake news.

Thereby creating a new term and cycle, for 'fake definition'.

The current trend by reputable services is to simply abandon the word by switching to the term, disinformation.

It would really get conservative community buzzing if Infowars could manufacture a Martian birth certificate for President Obama.

That is no more irrational than the worst of the cockamamie claims that Alex Jones of Infowars comes up with!
