Oh my. I hope she heals soon.

I don't really have anything to update. It's hot. We're tenting. NY pizza is delicious. Bear Mountain state park was packed with every kind of human imaginable, all of them playing crap ty music. We took a sidebar trip to West Point which was neat. We're losing weight*.

Yeah, you bet it's delish! Jersey pizza is the same. Although there are places that advertise "East Coast Pizza" out here, none of it comes even close. On the boardwalk you can pay something like 10 bucks for a large pizza about the size of your table. Not joking. And they're displayed (for slices) and brought to the table on stands. It's so darn cool. So pretty I have pics of them. Homesick again.

* Protip: If you want to lose weight just eat less. Hiking is a ridiculous way to go about it. When we get off the trail I'mma do that so I don't have to do this anymore.

But...you are still seeing different parts of the country and meeting a goal. Even if you didn't make it to Katahdin, you still spent your summer hiking the AT. That's praise and pride worthy in my book.

Of course my book would be sitting in a cool home with all my stuff while you guys are in humidity and in pain, so...easy for me to say. You guys take care of yourselves. Do what you can when you can and try to enjoy the in between resting and sight seeing out there.

Have you guys seen droves of fire flies at dusk there? One thing I miss about living back there on a summer night.

Hey Cam,

Everything okay on the trail?

You can't tell we're taking another rest day? One can only eat so much artisan ice cream in Salisbury, CT before the siren song of crap posting on the Internet beckons...

Got it. Is your wife’s ankle holding up okay?

Yeah, she's all healed up. We we took a zero yesterday and were getting back on the trail today, but we have rain here, the World Cup is on, and we just decided to take another day off... probably more for a mental break than anything else. The trail gets pretty tedious because it's the same stuff every day. Sure the terrain varies, but it's still granite rocks, hills up, hills down ash/oak/maple/pine trees, the same wildlife, and bugs. I call it the hamburger effect. Sure hamburgers are great, but if you eat them every day they're just buns, condiments, and patties and you lose your appetite for them.

Been watching the cup myself. Pretty exciting so far. Hope the weather improves and you get a little more scenic variety.

So if you're trying to get into shape I recommend getting a Fitbit. I just earned my snowboots badge (walking 45000 steps in one day), my 747 badge (climbing 4000 stories), and Serengeti badge (walking 500 miles). They're pretty great for reminding you to move, tracking calories, tracking everything, really. Super helpful tool to add to one's weight loss kit.

Western Mass is pretty. We pitched our tent two nights ago in a spot called Sages Ravine. Google it! We also passed by a monument marking the last battle site of Shay's Rebellion. Google it! We'll hike tomorrow and then get a room to avoid a thunderstorm on Thursday.

Oh, I read an article about people not moving around enough. Apparently it's worse than smoking. I believe it. I'm super tired, but aside from trash talking on the Spirit Paradise forum I've found my mood has really lightened, and my resting heart rate has improved (78 to 69). I suspect exercise improves more than one's waistline.

Western Mass is gorgeous! And I totally agree that exercise improves more than the waistline. I’ve been trying to get a chronic cough fixed for months now, and the reduction in ability to exercise has played hell with my mood.

Have you seen an ENT specialist? For some reason I think a chronic cough could be related to sinus drainage; my sister was a ENT tech and shared various stories about people's ailments...
