The question was posed to me: "What is the churchs stance on medical marijuana?"

I know that some of you here are associated with the church offices and might be better equipped to answer this from an official standpoint. I honestly don't know. Is it still against the Word of Wisdom if it is not against the law?

I don't think MJ was an issue at the time of the revelation of section 89, but:

Quote:
8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.

I'd say the "judgement and skill" part could be applied to the medical uses of MJ.

While scientific studies and always contentious and open to review and change, some studies have found no connection between marijuana smoking and cancer. This was one:

If marijuana relieves cancer patients of nausea due to treatment, I say give it to them on demand. No, I'm not the church but that's my opinion.

Cancer patients, AIDS patients, eating disorders and especially those afflicted with "hippie wasting disease".

Hi Gazelam.

FYI, the dude started a similar thread over on the MAD/FAIR(?) boards a while back. It was quite enlightening. You might want to do a search for that. I'm too lazy. But, I highly recommend it.

Hi Ray.

If one was to eat, rather than smoke the stuff, there would be no worries about cancer anyway. It doesn't necessarily have to be smoked in order to receive its medicinal benefits. Perhaps you already knew this. If so, then please disregard the above.

Thanks for your responses. I'll look up the Dudes thread over there. Was really searching for any official statement the church may have made.

I remember that thread that The Dude started on MAD. It was actually quite a good thread.

Most of the consensus from Church members there was that if the substance is legal, prescribed by a doctor, and the patient is taking the medicine responsibly, it is not against the Word of Wisdom. This is my feeling as well, by the way.

I don't recall, but I don't think there was an official Church stance quoted.

If you have really bad nausea, then eating it isn't an option.

What were the basic conclusions of the MAD thread? I'm so banned even new accounts I create are banned within minutes (I guess through IP tracking), which means I can't even search. Perhaps someone could link to it from here.

There is always the suppository option.
