Hello All,

Misery stated in another post that Utah is behind the times. I will have an opportunity to visit Utah this Spring (yes, the Ikea store in Draper, like that's your business). What do I need to know about visiting Utah? Do's / Don'ts?

Jersey Girl

We drive on the same side of the road as you do, just a little more lax. Elvis has been sighted a few times at the Iceberg Drive-In in Draper, Utah. It would not hurt to brush up on your Deseret alphabet. Set your watch to Mountain Time, 1956.

Go to the canyons and national parks, take lots of pictures, don't get a tattoo unless you talk to Sono.
Avoid temple square and men in white shirts and ties and name tags.
Everything is closed on Sundays except the malls that are owned by the church. Stay at the MArroit they show X-Rated films.

Go to church any Mormon church if you so desire. Go have fun and you will see if you choose to see that they are behind and men rule the state and women are merely there.

If you are in Provo go to BYU and try to find a coffee or a coke.

Go to a restaurant and order a drink and have everyone give you the evil eye, you will enjoy Utah Jersey Girl. You will fit right in cause you wear overalls and you don't tease your hair.

Let me see anymore advice you need about Utah.

If you want a lotto ticket you have to drive to Malad or Preston, Idaho.

If you visit the Temple you can go to the visitors center and watch a movie. The used book stores have great backlogs of out of print church books.

Theres lots of great places to hike as well.

If you need a time out from the mormies in the malls, either go to Sugarhouse in Salt Lake City or up to Park City for a break.
Also don't assume all resturants in the outlying areas sell even beer and wine, ask before seated.

Misery is clueless.

Utah is not behind the times at all. You will find it Salt Lake City like any other large western city such as Denver, Boise, Phoenix, etc. You will not be able to order a liquor beverage in a restaurant other then a beer though and all liquor is sold in a state run liquor stores.

Visit downtown Salt Lake City, it is a lovely city. You ought to check out temple square if you are interested in Mormons. Go to Snowbird and ride the tram!!! Check out Park City as well.

Actually I think Jason is the clueless one.. I am pretty sure in most large resturants you can order a mixed drink.. Before the Olympics it was really screwy, you had to specify a liquor in your drink. So if you wanted a margarita you had to say “with tequila” … Oh and the beer is watered down to 3.2%.

I was just back there in 2005 ordered a mixed drink in Olive Garden, Italian Marguarita full alcohol but no bar to wait at. People left because there was no bar.
You can buy beer at the grocery stores but not hard liquor or wine you need to go to the liquor store for those.
You can't buy beer on Sundays however, why I do not know.

Went to St. George ordered a Bahama Mama at the Red Lobster and the waitres asked me if Iwanted alcohol in it...well yeah...got to Vegas and there was liquor everywhere.

Jason have you ever been to Utah...I am thinking no!!!!!!

The liquor laws are still screwy even now way after the Olympics....too many Mormons think alcohol is evil.....

Just for general references here....

I don't drink alcohol (not that I don't feeeeeeel like it somedays!)
I don't watch x-rated movies
I don't gamble (as in lotto tickets)

I do shop ;-) (IKEA I'm a comin'!)
I do eat food
I do love nature so would love to see the caverns and such

Can I tour the Salt Lake City Temple? (parts of it at least?)

I've been to church at the local Ward and Stake (been there done that)

I could easily fake my way through 1956 and am already on Mountain Time!

Sooooooo.....

Name some restaurants that are particular to the area that have good food!!

Also, there are a TON of scrapbooking and rubber stamp companies in Provo...does anyone know if they have outlets?

Yes, I know I have boring interests.

I like just about anything. Any restaurants that are considered Salt Lake City traditions? Money isn't a big deal.

La Caille at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon in Sandy, has good French food although it is pricey by Utah standards. Likewise Log Haven is also good. We have a number of good Indian and Thai restaurants in Salt Lake Valley.

Sweet Tomatoes in Sandy (I think) is by far the best for soups and salads (I go there every time I'm in Salt Lake City, even if I have to bum a ride).

Rodizio Brazilian restaurant. Salt Lake City. Very cool. Go hungry. Visit the little park that in the neighborhood if you want to see Joseph on the head of the Sphinx.

Dead Goat Saloon. Salt Lake City. Hilarious place.

Mandarin Restaurant, Bountiful. Very good Chinese.

Best ice cream: USU Creamery in Logan.
