And that's the sneaky part of the church's "logic."

This is going to sound silly, but when I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, it was a transcendant experience for me. I can't tell you how much that book touched me, orders of magnitude more than anything I ever experienced in the church.

But it doesn't mean that Francie Nolan was a real person or that Betty Smith was a prophet of God. It just means that that book was exactly what I needed to read at that time in my life and affected me deeply.
