This is a great graphic that shows you step by step, using only trusted LDS sources themselves (each one is photographed with helpful markings) that demonstrate without any anti-Mormon materials, or non approved First Presidency fears how to actually research and find (or show friends or family) that Joseph Smith did, in fact, practice polygamy, and some of the females were seriously young. The graphic is actually captivating at how simple the church could truly teach their real history were they so inclined to, even after declaring they were going to be transparent, because apparently the tens of thousands of families of ex Mormons are STILL not getting the message that yes, it was JOSEPH SMITH who practiced polygamy with young girls, not just and only Brigham Young. Apparently its going to take some over the pulpit preaching to get this clear in the heads of literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Sainters to realize this is no longer anti-Mormon material as they were taught to believe for decades in church, but sanctioned and sanctified by the First Presidency. Notice as well in the footnote, the church officially used Todd Compton's book In Sacred Lonliness to demonstrate the numerous wives of Smith! This approved text was blisteringly ridiculed and reviewed by many Mormon apologists with their thinking that this is not the way to study and write about polygamy. The Brethren apparently don't think much of their own apologists efforts to help maintain strong and vibrant testimonies.

I like to see the title “In Sacred Loneliness” on the church’s website. What an awful but apt description. Granted, as is the point of the post, most believing Mormons will never get that far.

The real history wouldn't convert many. The room would probably be empty right after the seer stone presentation.

You mean you believe that Joseph Smith actually saw words on a rock???????????

The central problem is this: an infallible God revealing “truth” through fallible humans.

Like a water filter operating in reverse. This is the fundamental Mormon apologetic at work in the essays.

Pure water goes in. Dirty, polluted water comes out. The pure water is still there, of course, but with a few “extras”.

The filter, in the analogy, is a church leader claiming to teach pure truth. But it isn’t pure and it isn’t all truth. Lacking a control sample of the pure water, legitimate questions are met by the filter company with responses including: “trust us”, “there are no answers to that”, “only God knows” and “the water IS good”.

Then, thoughtful questioning members are asked to carry the burden of discerning, by the same process, what is truth and what is error. So the muddy polluted water (from the reverse filter of the leader) now passes through a massively parallel set of reverse filters — personal revelation attempted by more fallible humans, each and every member — and out pours heterogeneous samples of even muddier and more polluted water.

Then the fallible leader attempts to correct the members by comparing their extra polluted water to his own mostly polluted water. With conviction the worst samples are thrown out. Others repaired. Others praised and promoted.

But in some cases, the chemistry over time drifts to an obvious state of foulness, promoting the lead filter to declare previous filters faulty. The problem, thankfully, is always resolved by modern filters.

It never ends. Meanwhile is anyone ever closer to having pure water?

Complicating matters, the water filter company protects itself and the integrity of its filters at all costs. As a result, scientific and straightforward tests of the filter performance are discarded in favor of an appeal to authority and equating possibility with certainty: you can’t prove the water is bad, and it might be pure, so trust our authority on the matter.
