Mormonism and American Destiny

Post by _Meadowchik »

The more I learn about, say, the expansion of the Roman Empire and the constant conflict involved, the more it is clear to me how the colonisation of the Americas was a fluke. Without the enormous misfortune experienced by American natives because of immunity-loss and disease, the 1500s and onward would likely have looked completely different.

So how does that misfortune of millions and good fortune of others impact the survivors, psychologically? Of course, human nature will start suggesting ideas like "destiny" which may comfort those who benefit and fill up the vacuum. Repeated comforting words will become tradition and eventually dogma. Entire political thought will be impacted. The physics of the cosmos will be explained in terms to align with the dogma.

With that in mind, what is the difference in attitude and behaviour when one feels blessed versus lucky?

When you feel that God has set aside a land for you, how will that impact your attitude towards others wanting to share it? Does this attitude live in American politics today? And how much is Mormonism dependent on the this attitude of ownership?
