Philander Knox Smartt III arrived in Puerto Rico on July 1, 2013, as an energetic 43-year-old, and expected to preside over Mormon missionaries serving in that collection of islands for three years.

Ten months later, however, Smartt was dismissed as mission president and booted from the church for unspecified misconduct with multiple young female missionaries.

Sounds like a real stand up guy... Another great failure for the spirit and the gift of discernment.

The SLTrib article repeated the phrase multiple times that "the Church is between a rock and a hard place". The utter lack of discernment IS the rock and hard place. The two biggest take-aways from this entire fiasco (Joseph Bishop et al) is:

1) The Church cares more about saving face and it's image than anything else and will throw any member under the bus when it suits them. Frankly, their behavior is nothing less than evil made even more evil by their desire to wrap their actions in piety.

2) The Church leaderships' long vaunted power of discernment is nothing more than a bunch of old men trusting their outdated, deeply flawed instincts and believing that the creator of the universe holds them in such high esteem that He's planted those instincts in them.

Rock, meet Hard Place...

"Shortly before Smartt’s actions were discovered, his wife was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which is often a debilitating disease. The diagnosis was widely known among missionaries and came to be seen as the catalyst for the couple’s sudden departure, though LDS leaders never offered any reason for their absence beyond saying that the president had been released."

Elder Devn Cornish of the Seventy offered reasons to the senior missionaries quoted in the Tribune article (see blog post here): "So Elder Cornish called us shortly into the office to fill us in. ... Elder Cornish said that after some discussion among some very senior Brethren it was decided that President would be released so he and Sister Smartt could go back to get the very best medical help available."

I can only imagine the wonderful blessing that was given him by a General Authority upon being set apart as a mission president. I'm sure the Holy Spirit uttered things like how much the Lord was pleased with Smartt and that he would have a marvelous and fulfilling mission in Puerto Rico.

Once again, the Holy Ghost is a liar. Mormonism is a total lie.

The Book of Abraham is a lie.

The Explanations of Facsimile No. 3 are a lie. Period.

Mormons are liars. All of them. All. There are no exceptions.

Could it be that President Smartt wants something more from Leah? His wife looks genuinely happy having a real smile. But President Smartt is hiding something. That's not a real smile -- it looks shifty and sly. He's up to something?

3 years later he's arrested for larceny and burglary and released on $10,000 bond. The Holy Ghost sure knows how to pickem.

Well, his profile is still up on LDS.org:

He was also arrested in 2016 and charged with larceny and burglary:

You'll note that the HOLY GHOST previously called this creep to be a bishop and stake president prior to becoming a mission president. What does that say of the HOLY GHOST?

Boo!

It's classic Cult policy to protect the organization at the expense of its members at all cost and in every manner possible.

The reason given by the sociologist quoted in the SLT article for the delay in reporting is to allow the abused sister missionaries to finish serving their missions without the information going public.

I suppose that makes some sense.

But if my math is right, Smartt began his mission presidency in July of 2013, and ten months later was booted.

That puts it at May of 2014. If a sister missionary he abused had just started her mission when he was released (unlikely), that sister missionary would serve an additional eighteen months.

That puts the termination date for the hypothetical sister missionary at November of 2015.

It has been two-and-a-half years since any sister missionary he abused would have completed her mission, so the idea the church waited to go public was to allow his victims to complete their missions seems specious.

What has happened between the time of Smartt's release in May of 2014 and today?

One thing is the Joseph Bishop scandal.

I note that a woman sought an injunction against him for protection against dating violence at the same time:

It looks like the larceny/burglary charges were dropped.

Which strongly suggests that CRIMES were committed or the very suggestion of "criminal charges" wouldn't have been mentioned. It looks like the church coaxed these women to sweep it all under the rug in order to protect the good name of the church.

The LDS church is DIRTY. You can be sure of that. Guilty as sin!
