I'm amazed that you're amazed.
Members are conditioned from an early age to shut their eyes to any Mormon related material that isn't correlated through Church channels. To this day I know long standing members of the Church still think polygamy started with Brigham Young. Many, many members just don't entertain anything slightly faith threatening and will just discount any and all discussion or research about it. They simply refuse to talk about it.
