One reason is the unreasonable stupidity of many who do this with the Bible.

As long as people continue to pretend the Bible teaches true science, then science has every right and obligation to fight against ignorance and dismal stupidity. Hurrah for science!

I think it's part of the move to put religion somehow outside of scientific reasoning (because religion is losing). It's more special pleading as John Loftus says in his blog http://www.debunking-christianity.com/2017/04/all-christian-apologetics-is-special.html?m=1

One of my pet peeves is Creationism. Teaching creationism in schools is like letting the fox in the henhouse.
