It's no surprise that, once again, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is attempting to force its anti-gay bigotry into the secular domain, filing a "friend of the court" brief with the U.S. Supreme Court against same-sex marriage ("Mormon church joins other faiths in asking U.S. Supreme Court for same-sex marriage ban," April 14).
After all, the church also pushed Utah's recently passed SB296, the "license to discriminate" bill. It did so only because the bill extended the legal right of the church, its subsidiaries and its affiliates to discriminate against the LGBT community, not only in religious matters but also in employment and housing throughout the state.
Sure, the church claims that it loves "so-called gays and lesbians" as "sons and daughters of God" while discriminating against them.
Just as the Mormon Lord Jesus preached, "Love thy neighbor as thyself" (Leviticus 19:18) while commanding a few verses later: kill the icky gay ones (Leviticus 20:13). Yes, really.
With love like that, who needs hate?
