Utah Mormons have serious porn problems ...

Interesting article in the Deseret News (link below) about Internet searches in Utah -- the state leads or nearly leads the nation in searches of ... ahem ... 'less-than-TBM' words (but it also leads in 'very TBM' words!). I always thought the Brethren's apparent obsession in talks about the "evils" of porn was a bit of an overreaction, but maybe they're on to something.

Of course, you repress sexual urges, and make them evil, give a person a computer who doesn't have a bedtime, and you're in for trouble.

But hear the GAs say it, it's just Satan. Not a lack of Kama Sutra in the marriage bed.

That may not be surprising. But what is a little more eye-opening is that the city also ranks No. 1 on the site for Internet searches for terms such as "nudity," "naked girls," "pornography" and "strip tease."
Furthermore, Salt Lake is No. 2 in the nation for Google searches of such words as "hot sex" and "naughty."
Ironically, the city also ranks No. 2 for "family values."
In other disturbing rankings, according to Google Trends as related by the FBI, the city is:

• Fifth in the nation for searches regarding "incest."
• Seventh for searches on "child pornography."
• Eighth for searches on "sex."
• Tenth for searches on "pedo," short for pedophile.

Define irony: a state founded and controlled by an authoritarian church yet leads the country in kinky internet behavior.

Define hypocrisy: a group preaching on family culture and then going home for some naughty incestous pediphilic pornographic strip teasing hot sex involving kids.

This really confuses me. I can not understand the relationship here...if there is any. Interesting.

It's all those non-Mormons, so strangled in such a sinless place.

Strange, I don't mind nudity, but I can count on one hand the number of net searches I've conducted since age 18. I had my mother buy my porn before then (well, only once...and out of a desire to be "educated"). I live in VA.

Like I said, push a natural urge into the darkness, and it will flourish there...

Last I checked, Utah wasn't 100% TBM. In fact, I suspect that TBM's represent about 1/4th of the states population--which is roughly equivolent to the perceptage of UBM's (Untrue Blue Mormons). And roughly half of the population are non-Mormon (including ex-Mormons).

If true, then why are you assuming that the TBM minority are behind the Porn statistics rather than some of your fellow UBM's and ex-Mormons and non-Mormons?

Granted, there are sufficient occurances within the Church to warrant leadership interventions (including disfellowship and ex-communications, of which some are now likely numbered among those that are a part of the statistic). But, is it rational to jump to conclusion about internet statistics that relate to the general state population based on several Conference talks and Church messages?

I mean...really....is your need to smear the Church so intense that you resort to these kinds of rash and fallacious insinuations? It would be like me insinuating that you are number among the statistics because you live in Utah.

Thanks, -Wade Englund-

Like I said, it's the non-Mormons. That will always be the TBM stance.

Perfect example of sinlessness: Wade. He's never been married, abstains from sex like a good temple going Mormon...has no desire to look at a woman's body outside the sanctity of marriage...

See, y'all? It's the non-LDS out there in Utah. With the absence of brothels, strip bars, sex in alleys, etc...they have to resort to the internet. Unlike the rest of us out here in "the world".

Please excuse me. I have an appointment with my pimp. Sales have been down this month, and he's pissed. Usually people are far more "jolly" this time of year. I told him the economy was unstable and to get off my back.

I did not mean that "TBM's" only have serious porn problems, just that "Utah Mormons" do -- I used "TBM" in my post as a euphemistic way to refer to the naughty words being searched. In addition, the Brethren's recent focus on Internet porn seems to bear out my assumption.

But, is it rational to jump to conclusion about internet statistics that relate to the general state population based on several Conference talks and Church messages?

I think it is rational given that Mormons make up nearly 70% of the State of Utah.

I mean...really....is your need to smear the Church so intense that you resort to these kinds of rash and fallacious insinuations?

I'm not "smearing" anything. Will you say the same thing when a GA uses these stats during the next Gen'l Conference? Methinks not. Any time Utah leads a category among all states, there will naturally be a correlation with Mormonism, given the high percentage of Mormons in Utah. That's just a fact. Get used to it.

Define cognitive distortion: Overgeneralization - Taking isolated cases and using them to make wide generalizations; Mental filter - Focusing exclusively on certain, usually negative or upsetting, aspects of something while ignoring the rest, like a tiny imperfection in a piece of clothing; Jumping to conclusions - Assuming something negative where there is no evidence to support it; Magnification and Minimization - Exaggerating negatives and understating positives. Often the positive characteristics of other people are exaggerated and negatives understated. For example, it is taking several negative statistic that apply to the general population, and fallaciously assuming it applies to a fraction of the states population, while ignoring or minimizing the overwhelming wealth of positive statistics.

Define stereotyping: Assumed characteristics on a large group of individuals whose beliefs, habits, and realities often disagree with the imposed image. Ideas held by some individuals about members of particular groups, based solely on membership in that group. They are often used in a negative or prejudicial sense and are frequently used to justify certain discriminatory behaviors. For example: people taking several state-wide statistics and assuming they are general characteristic of designated fraction of the states population, when other statistic would suggest otherwise.

I would like to see the wider data. My guess would be that those states where sexual material is harder to come by, such as states in the Bible Belt, you'd probably see more hits on such sexually explicit searches. I don't think it has much to do with being LDS or not (I would suspect that there isn't a huge difference in the percentages among LDS and non-LDS who view porn); I suspect that both Mormon and non-Mormon Utahns are likelier to view internet porn because that's one of the few sexual outlets available to them.

It's just a hunch, but I would bet money that the statistics tend in that direction.

This is an excellent illustration of opposition in all things. Such stark constrasts could be a testimony that truth resides here.

I'm quite certain the Brethren are aware of and concerned with the difficulty many believing members are having with Porn issues.

Ask any Bishop or Stake leader if there is a problem?

I know that (at least a few years ago) 70% of referrals to LDS social services were due to sexual issues.

I know (at least a few years ago) research showed 76-78% of those with sexual addiction are members of fundamentalist religions (Mormonism was included in this category).

There are some serious issues that could be addressed. Blaming Satan is not the answer.
