Since when did the Mormons start dedicating LEASED Buildings?

As the law firm of the LDS Church, Kirton McConkie was given the first option to lease the building, Hyde said.

Is this pandering to the Lawyers? Didn't Christian Jesus loath Lawyers for their inherent wickedness? And yet Mormon Jesus is kissing their asses?

I am a little lost on this. Some of us don't live in Happy Valley. Care to elaborate?

I think he's saying that he finds it bizarre that the Brethren blessed/dedicated a building that is only being leased by Kirton & McConkie. Normally the Brethren dedicate buildings that are meant to be permanent--e.g., temples, or BYU buildings that have been named after General Authorities. Here, though, it seems that Elder Oaks (or one of the Twelve) "dedicated" the offices of K &McC at City Creek, in spite of the fact that they are merely leasing the space. In other words, it seems like they are granting a special favor to these lawyers.

What, exactly, are the lawyers gaining from the brethren giving a building a prayer?

What is disturbing to me about this, though, is that based on the fact that dedicating buildings is normally done for, as you pointed out, temples and Church buildings, it appears that the brethren view City Creek as some sort of Church extension. There have been many pointed attempts to assure the membership that tithing dollars were not utilized in financing the City Creek Mall. A dedication suggests otherwise.

I'm not sure what they are "gaining," apart, of course, from the normal things one would expect from a blessing. I think, along with you and TMB, that the strange aspect of this is the fact that the Brethren would view a law firm as something meriting an ecclesiastical blessing in the first place. I guess it's just a sign of how important the GAs think these lawyers are?

Why not give Church attorney's a little boost, even in leased buildings? Might help keep settlement costs low next time one of those failure to report cases surfaces outside the Jell-O belt.

Plus it could keep criminal attorneys honest.

Dedication

Whenever The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints constructs a new building, there is a dedication ceremony held when the building is finished. The purpose of this ceremony is to set aside the building for the work of God. A Latter-day Saint dedication ceremony includes a special prayer designating the building for Church use and asking God to bless the structure and grounds. A dedication ceremony generally also includes music and talks from Church leaders. Attendance at the event is usually by invitation only and the length varies depending on the type of building being dedicated.

Mormon buildings that are dedicated include temples and meetinghouses, as well as places set aside for educational purposes, such as institutes, seminaries and buildings at Church-owned universities. Temples are always dedicated by a general authority, whereas a meetinghouse may be dedicated by a local Church leader. After a temple is dedicated, only Mormons in good standing may enter, but all other Church buildings are open to the public after they are dedicated.

Lord, you people are really sad human beings....

Anything that is to be for the work of the Lord is dedicated. Doesn't matter if it's outright owned or not.

People have been dedicating their HOMES forever, yet few have actually OWNED them.
There is nothing new here. You guys just can't stop belittling perfectly innocent and faithful activities can you?

Lord I thank God that I wasn't an anti-mormon for very long, because I saw the pure unadulterated EVIL and warped minds that you people engage in, like this example.

You would murder a religious person just so your child didn't have to learn about religion.
Think you wouldn't? You do it in word every day. Further, YOUR the kind of people that DID do it in the past. So you're a little more "civilized" now.... Your evil is still the same in the SOUL! :(

Will they be dedicating any space leased to banks that hold LDS church deposits?

Where? Show me an example of anyone here doing verbal murder (whatever that means) so that their child won't have to learn about religion.

You seem to get quite exercised over the most benign criticisms. Perhaps you should close down the message board for an hour or two and get some fresh air.

I never understood the need for religious dedications. The ones I heard said for my grandmother's funerals were long and pious. Not my kind of gig.

This is about the finishing up and leasing of City Creek, the church's new mall that will make the Temple Square environs more pleasant. Wish they would do something about the air quality but I guess it is too advanced for them to think about the air as part of the environs. Although the air is just right there, hard up against all the buildings, oh, and inside the buildings too.

Kirton McConkie is the LDS church's Salt Lake City law firm, it will lease one of the office towers.

The McConkie in the name is Oscar McConkie, Jr. brother of the late Bruce R. MConkie. Oscar Jr. was a mission president but released early because he was too distracted and his wife, oh, and did I mention there was this attorney who worked there with a very recognizable surname who got arrested for )(*@$ and was ex'ed. I forget if it was a female undercover officer or a tranvesite. Oscar III works there too, one of most personable people you will ever meet, I could say more but it would be petty. And I digress.

Oscar Jr. taught an Institue class for law students at the U. A partner from the firm always sits on the stand during General Conference representing the "civil authority." Oscar Jr. said so himself in my hearing. No idea what he meant, I think he was a little confused about St. Augustine. But Oscar Jr. thought he was pretty special because it was frequently him. While brother Bruce sat over with the GA's representing the ecclesiastical authority. Council of the 50, Joseph Smith crowned king, I thought there was only one authority. But I digress.

Kirton McConkie wasn't that big until the church spun off the LDS Hospitals to be Intermountain Healthcare. (The members of the board were all trusted Mormons and the board is self perpetuating. So it was kind of a spin off that wasn't much of a spin off.) Then the law firm exploded as it began to do the medical malpractice defense work for Intermountain as it grew. It could certainly use its very own shiny new office building. Pitty about the air quality though. Its an open question whether the firm makes more money from the church or from Intermoutain. We can check the church financial disclosure next conference and . . . oh, wait, no we can't.

I small group of Kirton McConkie lawyers take turns carrying a cell phone that answers the bishops child abuse hot line. Perhaps the attorneys could use more training or the bishops don't know how to dial a phone.

The church's regional centers around the world, I forget what you call them, maybe I'm recovering from Mormonism, have a Kirton McConkie lawyer on duty. Those are considered pretty sweet positions if you can get them. Live and work abroad for a while with a US law degree and license, get paid a US lawyers salary. Since you are a Utah Mormon in a non-Utah enviroment, the local members will pretty much bow down to you like the 19 year old missionary you were when you first learned the local language.

Kirton McConkie is now probably the biggest law firm in Salt Lake City, (not that Salt Lake City is that big). Before the Intermountain spin off it was probably in the middle of the 2nd tier. The big 3 firms then represented Kennecott, what was then Utah Power and Light and Mountain Fuel who only hired law review. Now the Mormon lawyers have overtaken those damn gentiles.

So now the church will pay Kirton McConkie legal fees and get some of it back in rent. Also, the church will have a guarenteed tenant and won't have to worry about losing money from a big vacancy. And the law firm will have 2 big guarenteed clients. Quool. Is this a Mormon Ambassador moment coming on.

I sometimes attend Protestant or Catholic services. After the collection, in some of them, the money is brought to the alter and blessed. Always creeps me out. I'm getting that feeling now.

How am I wrong and need "meds"?
Are not people just like you all here, beholden to the SAME exact rhetoric as early Anti-Mormons?
What makes you different? A little civilization? It hasn't changed your rhetoric, so you haven't changed as much as you think.

Those are facts.

Mountain Meadows was a special case under special circumstances.....

It is not representative of what was "normal" in Mormonism.
Anti-mormonism (hating of Mormons and Mormonism) is "normal" within anti-mormonism. Hating other people for whatever reason is not "normal" within Mormonism.

For your example to be valid, Mormons would have had to have hate and bigotry toward non-mormons as a regular behavior and rhetoric, as you have toward Mormons and Mormonism. Since we don't, your example FAILS.

As usual, you people don't actually think....

The Mountain Meadows Massacre was systematic of attitudes that exist in Mormonism to this day:

Distrust of the gentiles
Great desire to avoid the appearance of evil (leave no witnesses)
Fuzzy morals

And as long as the kill count is stacked up on your side of fence, you don't get to pretend you're persecuted.

ldsfaqs is over the top and filled with hate, but I do agree that this is not an issue. I don't care if they want to dedicate Monson's favorite eating establishment.
